Ngrams. Word usage. For example, the graph titled "The use of credit" shows the usage of that phrase. It does not
show the use of credit. And the graph titled "Beneficial credit" shows
all usage of that particular word combination, not only when the source
says credit is beneficial, but also when they say it is not.

The fourth ("credit and economic growth") and fifth ("debt and economic growth") graphs show no activity before the 1940s. This suggests to me that there was no well-developed economic analysis of the effects of credit use and debt until some time after the second world war.
