"The commonwealth was not yet lost in Tiberius's days, but it was already doomed and Rome knew it. The fundamental trouble could not be cured. In Italy, labor could not support life..." - Vladimir Simkhovitch, "Rome's Fall Reconsidered"

Today I'm looking up spindle assemblies for my mower, and Amazon has a note:
"Note: Available at a lower price from other sellers that may not offer free Prime shipping."
The Big Lie that works for Amazon seems to be "free shipping". Somehow, it doesn't bother my wife at all that the price of the product is $10 higher at amazon. "But the shipping is FREE!" she tells me.
She doesn't want to shop anywhere else.
It came up again this past weekend, two years after my comment above. "The shipping isn't free at Amazon," I said. "They just raise the price of what you're buying to cover the shipping!"
"No they don't," the wife insisted.
So it goes.
